About Me:
"...I am a junkyard, then, of all the libraries and bookstores I ever fell into or leaned upon, and am proud that I never developed such rare taste that I could not go back and jog with Tarzan, or hit the Yellow Brick Road with Dorothy, both characters and their books banned for fifty years by all the librarian and most educators. I have had my own loves, and gone my own way to become my own self.
I highly recommend you do the same. However crazy your desire, however wild your need, however dumb your taste may seem to others... follow it!
...If I had listened to all the taste-mongers and fools and critics, I would have played a safe game, never jumped the fence, and become a nonentity whose name would not be known to you now.
...To sum it all up, if you want to write, if you want to create, you must be the most sublime fool that God ever turned out and sent rambling.
You must write every single day of your life.
You must read dreadful dumb books and glorious books, and let them wrestle in beautiful fights inside your head, vulgar one moment, brilliant the next.
You must lurk in libraries and climb the stacks like ladders to snuff books like perfumes and wear books like hats upon your crazy heads.
I wish for you a wrestling match with your Creative Muse that will last a lifetime.
I wish craziness and foolishness and madness upon you.
May you live with hysteria, and out of it make fine stories.
Which finally means, may you be in love every day for the next 20,000 days. And out of that love, remake a world."

Ficktion Friday: Experimental

(This is a companion story to Good Girl, which I wrote last April. Basically, the scariest thing about that first Stargate movie? The dog masks on the guards. Freaked me right out because they looked like the Doberman that bit me when I was a kid. Strange parallels our minds create. Anyway. Still riffing on the 'aliens are Dobermans' thing, I guess. Living in this Fine City where people t

Ficktion Friday: Three Uncles Went to Vietnam

Three uncles went to Vietnam.

Three uncles went to Vietnam, and one uncle seemed to have found “the life.”

Three uncles went to Vietnam, but only one came home with a sharkskin suit. He never said what else happened while he was over there, but he was full of the wonder of the tailors of Southeast Asia. “You can get a monogrammed shirt, tailored suit, sports coat, cheap,” he told us, checking his cuffs. He talked about silk, and the little women who stood on chairs to measure

(It's Not Friday) Ficktion: My Boss's Dating Life Has Hit A Dead End

If he weren't already dead, I could kill that Dewey dude, I really could. Okay, so someday it may serve me well to know that the Dewey Decimal number for the commercial processing of kidney beans is 664.805652, but it bugs me no end that Maelinda thinks I'm an idiot since I don't know these things right off. What she doesn't understand is that I didn't get a library job because I wanted to organize things. I took the job because I wanted to read. Unfortunately, there's not a lot of rea

(It's not Friday, but it's) Ficktion: Should I Stay Or Should I Go On?

"I guess I'm not a sentimentalist, then," he'd laughed, tilting his head so that the light caught the almost colorless brush of lashes lowered over his green eyes. "I don't hold with calling it The Big Day. Frankly, I think the big day is the Monday after the whole shebang gets over with."

And everyone had laughed, and given Miercolette the kinds of smiles that indicated that they were sure they knew she and Alfred were a done deal, only the i's needing dotting, and the wax to cool on

It's barely still Friday, but I did it.
It helps that the picture was rather odd.
I'm off -- to bed -- hoping to find some energy to actually read some in an off hour or two. Happy weekending!

Hard to believe I could get words out in sentence order this week. *I* am pretty well spun with the news that we are moving to Glasgow. It's a matter of pride to me to keep participating in Ficktion.ning whether I'm here or in transit; we'll see how well this works when I'm on the road the first weekend of next month, and then the LAST weekend of next month when I ...move. And drive to NY to catch a plane. And then wander the UK until I find a home.

Dear God. What makes us think we can just do this?!

Sometimes I think I see things through a picket fence. Like not seeing the forest for the trees, I see life through a forest of people. Even when I think I can write something... else, almost everything comes out filtered through the lens of family and relationships.

I swear, next time I'm going to write about a talking cat or something.

I'm not even sure how we first encountered Totoro - just rented a video on a whim, and I have since tracked down EVERYTHING that particular cartoonist has done. It's just such a quirky little childlike world where there is possibly something friendly under the next bush - and even if it's not particularly friendly, it's magical, or at least has a bulbously cute body or something...

This reminds me that we have Totoro sitting at home, from Netflix, and still have to watch it...

I like your Totoro. There's something about giant cartoon owl-cats with vacant, thousand yard stares.

You know, everyone else uses an actual photograph in their Ficktion Friends thingy. I suppose I should grow up and dump the cartoons already, but... well, you know me better than that...
